The Mohawk: The Classic 80s Punk Haircut
Haircuts belong to the fashion world just as much as clothes and the accessories that go with them. Which means that, as with everything in the past, this brilliant way of styling your look eventually reaches the end of its moment. The bottom line: your look is out, and so are you. Be honest, the 90s bowl cut your mum gave you at some point in childhood is nothing but funny today.
That is no reason to let your head, or in this case your hair, hang.
Today's world of haircuts has current trends for everybody, and with the right barber you can be on one quickly. Trendsetters like David Beckham, Robbie Williams and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton have shown the way.
That is exactly why today's Charlemagne Premium blog is given over to the mohawk, because it is in greater demand than ever. So you can hold your own in the current trend conversation, the lines below are worth your attention. Enjoy.
The Mohawk, a Trend Cut That Comes and Goes
The mohawk is in greater demand than ever. Widespread in the punk scene during your childhood and teens, it is now enjoying a full comeback in a lot of different forms. More and more women, and musicians and athletes in particular, have pulled the cut back into the spotlight, since they like wearing the more extravagant versions. That means this cut can be shaped into something not just striking but genuinely extroverted.
The Classic Version Is the Mohawk
On a classic mohawk the sides of the head are shaved down to a few millimetres (roughly a #1 to #2 guard). The hair on top, running back to the nape, is left longer. Variations run from cutting the hair between the sides and the top as a fade, right through to a hard undercut for maximum impact. There are no limits here. What matters is styling the longer hair up into a strip, because that strip is what defines the cut.
Recent Years Have Produced a New Form of Mohawk
A lot of modified versions have appeared in recent years, which makes the mohawk unusually easy to tailor to the individual.
The fake mohawk, the rounded one also called a fohawk, has established itself as one of the trendiest cuts around. The main reason is presumably that the fohawk does not read as punk the way a full mohawk does, and its restraint makes it presentable in the business world too.
With the fohawk, the version cut for shorter hair is the most popular. The strip that gets styled is cut to 3 to 5 cm and the sides are taken shorter and shorter from there via a fade. Then there is the shape of the strip at the nape, which can be tapered to a point or left running out as one broad block towards the neck.
A faded mohawk like this needs less upkeep, incidentally, than the undercut version, which has to be kept sharp and re-shaved constantly.
Hair Tattoos and the Mohawk, a Pairing Like Adam and Eve...
With mohawks in particular you often see all sorts of patterns cut in that look like hair tattoos. There is no arguing about taste. Personally we would leave the hair tattoos off the head. In the end that is a trend from the mid to late 2000s and it is no longer current, unless you actively want to turn heads with your appearance, because you earn money from it for example.
Who Does the Mohawk Suit?
Haircuts have to suit the person wearing them, which means the head shape and the overall look. In principle the mohawk can be adapted to anybody and it works across the board. A trip to the barber, ideally with a photo of what you have in mind, gets you the guidance and advice you need to land the right version.
As you have read, the mohawk is not so simple to describe and comes in plenty of forms. The individual versions do have one thing in common: they need styling. Which you achieve with the right products. As always you will find them in the Charlemagne Premium shop, including for your facial hair, which incidentally pairs very well with a mohawk. Always keep one thing in mind:
„A healthy and well groomed beard is important for a real man, that's why we offer everything you need to keep yours doing so.“
As barbers with more than 20 years in the trade between us, we went looking for styling and care products that convinced us 100%. There were good products on the market, but none that gave us everything we needed. After some thought, in 2014 we decided to develop our own line. For two years we spent every free minute after work at the barbershop down in our cellar, refining the formulas. When it came to ingredients, only the best was good enough. We bought the finest jojoba oils available in Morocco and argan oil from Italy.
After two years and a fair number of attempts, our first product range was ready, and it has been winning customers over ever since. We think 98% positive reviews speak for themselves. Since the official launch in 2016 it has of course kept evolving. That is one reason Charlemagne Premium products have won not one but several comparison tests in recent years.
You will find all our products right here in our online store. For any questions about them we are reachable any time at info@charlemagne-premium.com We are happy to help.
